California Casino Proposal Debate Heats Up29 July 2004CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Wood TV8: "A proposed casino in Calhoun County is back in the spotlight. "Corn and wild flowers now stand at the proposed site near I-94 and 11 Mile Road in Emmett Township. But members of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi want to open a casino in the area. "…Critics and supporters will get their say on its potential environmental impact during a public hearing Wednesday night. "Plans for the casino have been in the works since 1999, and the hearing is the latest in a struggle between two sides, one who wants to protect its heritage, the other who wants to protect its community. "The proposed 135,000 square foot casino, called FireKeepers, has been held up in court since plans were first drawn five years ago. Now the Bureau of Indian Affairs has to do an environmental impact study. The tribe isn't worried. "…Some other concerns include a packed Michigan Avenue and police patrols…" |
