California Casino Pact Shakes Up Industry

LOS ANGELES – As reported by Reuters: "A deal to expand gambling at five tribal casinos in California is pulling other tribes to the negotiating table with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and promising to shake up a $5 billion industry.

"California's casino industry is nearing the size of Las Vegas in terms of dollars gambled, with an estimated $5 billion to $6 billion wagered at dozens of casinos across the state.

"About a dozen tribes concentrated in a few areas have the lion's share of the market, and two main groups of five tribes each have discussed changing the 20-year compacts.

"One group, composed of the Viejas, Pala, Rumsey, United Auburn and Pauma tribes, is expected to sign a financial pact with the state on Monday.

"…A second group of tribes met with Schwarzenegger's administration this week and have been eyeing the deal for expanded operations by other tribes…"
