California Casino Neighbors Band Together

22 April 2004

SAN BERNARDINO, California – A California Press-Enterprise: "Neighbors of the San Manuel casino in the San Bernardino foothills are banding together with communities statewide to urge elected officials to more closely regulate what types of projects tribes can build.

"The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is building a new 465,000-square-foot casino, a five-level parking structure and other facilities that are set to open early next year. Tribal Chairman Deron Marquez has called the project essential to maintaining the once-impoverished tribe's prosperity as other Southern California tribes expand their facilities.

"But residents of the neighborhoods that border the reservation say the tribe has done too little to ease their concerns that the expansion will bring more traffic, pollution, noise, litter and crime.

"…San Manuel leaders have said they are continuing to negotiate with the city to provide additional assistance. Neighbors say the help is too incremental to quickly alleviate congestion and safety and aesthetic issues."
