California Casino Measures Cause Buzz

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the San Bernardino Sun: "Two measures targeting Indian casinos will head to the ballots next year. Either could alter the future of local gambling.

"Hesperia residents likely will vote on a proposed Indian casino in March; signatures for a referendum were validated this week. It will nullify an agreement signed over the summer between the city and the Timbisha Shoshone tribe from Death Valley.

"Another measure that could be on the November ballot would require tribes to pay 25 percent of their slot-machine revenue to the state or give slot machines to some racetracks and card clubs.

"…The project's developer, Gary Fears, said the referendum doesn't concern him.

"`The tribe will prevail,' he said. `They have the legal right to be there and they have the community support.'…"
