California casino deals face polls

SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Press-Enterprise: "Secretary of State Debra Bowen's office Monday certified three more voter referendum measures on tribal-casino agreements, bringing to four the number qualified for the Feb. 5 ballot.

"Monday's announcement comes nearly four months after opponents of the deals announced they would begin collecting signatures to put them before voters.

"The targeted agreements, known as compacts, are between the state and the Morongo Band of Mission Indians near Banning, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in the Coachella Valley, the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians near Pechanga, and a San Diego County tribe..."
