California casino audit plans revealed16 May 2007SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Palm Springs Desert Sun: "Just before the Assembly Governmental Organization committee was briefed on internal controls for Indian casinos, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled a revised budget proposing expansion of a state unit to audit California's tribal casinos. "The governor seeks $1.7 million from the Indian Gaming Special Distribution Fund for the unit, was likely taken in response to a federal appeals court decision in 2006. The ruling stated that the National Indian Gaming Commission had no legal oversight in regulating standards for Las Vegas-type games and slots at the Colorado River Indian Tribes of Arizona, a ruling that keeps legal oversight with the states. "Philip Hogen, chairman of the National Indian Gaming Commission, advised Assembly members at the hearing that the tribes seeking ratified compacts already meet or exceed federal internal control standards. Those tribes include the local Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Morongo Band of Mission Indians.
