California Casino Aims to be Electrically Self-Sufficient

PALM SPRINGS, California – As reported by the Desert Sun: "Casino operators apparently don't like gambling on their future utility costs -- or risking that the power will go out in the middle of a customer's hot streak.

"So when they were planning their recently opened Spa Resort Casino, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians made a priority of being electrically self-sufficient. They opted to install a high-tech power generation system that uses clean-burning natural gas to generate electricity and thermal energy.

"…The system is touted as environmentally friendly, complying with the most stringent air-quality regulations. And tribal business official Timothy Taylor said casino operators won't have to worry about rolling statewide blackouts or even temporary local outages.

"'We are going to be able to generate 95 percent or more of our own electricity most of the time, and that is going to mean huge savings,' said Taylor, the Agua Caliente Band's chief operating officer, although he declined to cite specific dollar projections…"
