California can take tribes to court

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Capitol Weekly: "The Capitol's ongoing political opera involving Indian gaming, tribal rights and state power is moving through a new arena: the court system. And the next stop may be the U.S. Supreme Court.

"The case focuses on the classic dispute between the state and the tribes: Whose power is supreme? And the impact of the decision could go far beyond the question of political donations in California campaigns.

"Just before Christmas, the seven-member California Supreme Court ruled in a split decision that the state's political watchdog, the Fair Political Practices Commission, has the right to sue an Indian tribe in order to force compliance with California's campaign-finance laws…"
