California Bill Aims to Expand Gambling

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the San Mateo Daily Journal: "An attempt to capture money from Indian casinos could result in millions of dollars to benefit local police and child protective services in the cities of San Mateo and San Bruno — but officials aren't counting their coins just yet.

"The Gaming Revenue Act of 2004 is one of four gambling initiatives aiming to get on the November ballot. The initiative could allow slot machines at 11 card rooms and five race tracks statewide — including Bay Meadows in San Mateo and Artichoke Joe's in San Bruno— that already have gaming licenses. However, non-Indian gaming facilities will benefit only if tribes don't comply with the proposal.

"…Organizers of the initiative have until mid-June to get about 600,000 signatures to qualify it for the November ballot.

"…The financial benefit for San Mateo and San Bruno is still cloudy since officials are still waiting to see if the measure will even appear on the ballot…"
