California Ballot Initiative's Motives Questioned

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Santa Cruz Sentinel: "Opponents say that a November ballot initiative that backers promise will mean more money for police and education is really a deceptive ploy to enrich a handful of select businesses.

"That was part of the message Friday from Santa Cruz County Sheriff Mark Tracy and opponents of Proposition 68.

"Proposition 68 calls for the state's Indian tribes to revamp their gaming compacts to pay 25 percent of their gambling revenues to the state, or face losing the monopoly on slot machines in California.

"…Backers say the move would force Indian tribes to pay more and offer revenue for cash-strapped police and sheriff's departments, as well as other local government needs.

"However, Tracy and Dan Forbus of the Santa Cruz County Deputy Sheriff's Association said the banner of law enforcement was being used to lure voters.

"…Moreover, while the ballot measure would funnel revenues to law enforcement, that money is restricted to hiring new officers, but would allow the money to be spent to equip or train them…"
