California Anti-Gambling Coffers Near $90 Million

CALIFORNIA – As reported by the Palm Springs Desert Sun: "Combatants in the battle over gambling initiatives on the Nov. 2 ballot raised a combined total of $85.8 million through the end of September, according the latest campaign statements filed Tuesday.

"As they head into the last month of the campaign, seven campaign committees reported $11.3 million in the bank for their brawl over Proposition 70 to expand Indian gambling and Proposition 68 to allow non-Indians to operate Las-Vegas-style casinos.

"…Passage of Proposition 68 could result in a drain on the number of casino visitors in the Coachella Valley as they turn instead to racetracks and card clubs, especially in the Los Angeles area, that would be able to offer slot machines and run house-banked card games.

"Approval of Proposition 70 could lead to a greater variety of games and more of them in possibly more tribal casinos in the valley.

"Proposition 70 reported raising $22.5 million, spending $19.2 million and ending September with $3.6 million in the bank.

"… The biggest opposition committee is the No on 68, Californians Against the Deceptive Gambling Proposition, a coalition of Indian gaming tribes…"
