Calgary schools' gambling ban raises cash-flow fears30 September 2009CALGARY, Alberta -- As reported by the Catholic Herald: "Six months from a ban on all gambling-related fundraising, the Calgary Catholic School District is about to launch a foundation some fear will fall short of current revenues. "District officials say the impending Catholic Education Foundation of Calgary won't be a replacement for the $2 million raised annually for schools through casinos and bingos. "...Kevin Leitch, the president of a prominent Calgary high school marching band program, fearing the loss of gambling revenues will have a significant impact on the group. "...The district two years ago announced a ban on all casino and bingo fundraisers, effective March 2010, following a public feud between Bishop Fred Henry and Catholic school board trustees. "Leitch said it won't be easy to recoup the roughly $40,000 a year generated by volunteering at bingos, and further $40,000 to $50,000 the band splits with the school choir when they get the chance to work a casino every 18 months. "'We've got 60 fundraising ideas. The one thing it is going to take to make these ideas work, and the one thing we don't have, is an awful lot of volunteer time to be put into an unknown outcome,' said Leitch..." |
