Calder, Gulfstream Racetracks Ready if Ivan Comes Their Way13 September 2004FLORIDA -- As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "Frustration is apparent in the voices of racetrack officials Randy Soth and Scott Savin. Like most Floridians hit by hurricanes Charley and Frances, they cringe at the thought of having to endure a third hurricane, Ivan, which on Sunday afternoon was oscillating between a Category 4 and Category 5 storm and was pounding the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean. "In spite of the frustration, Soth, vice president and general manager of Calder Race Course near Miami, and Savin, president and general manager of Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, are both confident that their respective tracks will weather the storm should it come their way. "At present, Ivan is expected to hammer far western Cuba on Monday, before heading into the southeast Gulf of Mexico by early Tuesday. Although the storm has not yet taken a turn toward the north-northwest (it is currently on a west by northwest track, according to weather.com,) the Florida Panhandle appears to be Ivan's most likely target in the States. Landfall in the U.S., according to some meteorologists, would be sometime Wednesday. "...Although in the same jeopardy as Gulfstream, Calder is also saddled with the added burden of being in the middle of a race meeting, which includes a stable area full of horses, which makes things a little more complicated, but not impossible..." |
