Caesars Targets Union in Advertisement

5 October 2004

Las Vegas Sun

LAS VEGAS -- Caesars Entertainment Inc. reached out to Atlantic City strikers in a full-page newspaper advertisement, listing side-by-side the terms of its offer and the three-year deal signed by Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts, which has three casinos in Atlantic City and settled with the union Thursday.

Also unaffected by the strike are the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which struck its own contract with the union before it opened last year, and the Sands Hotel-Casino, which agreed to abide by the first contract reached by the union.

Caesars brought in 100 management employees from other jurisdictions -- spokesman Robert Stewart wouldn't say where -- to relieve employees who have been filling in for strikers at its three casinos. Harrah's did the same over the weekend, flying in 300 management employees from its midwestern and western casinos on charter jets, Jonas said.

Still, the strike was being felt.

Bally's Atlantic City casino, which absorbed the adjacent Claridge Casino Hotel after the latter went bankrupt and renamed it "the Claridge Tower," closed its 500 rooms Sunday, apparently unable to service them. "We have decided to limit the occupancy at the Claridge Tower so we can continue to meet the needs of our guests," said spokesman Brian Cahill.
