Business Officials: Las Vegas Economy Should Stay Strong

LAS VEGAS, Nevada –Jan. 24, 2001 –As reported by the Associated Press: “Las Vegas should continue to thrive through 2001 despite some clouds on the tourism horizon and a slowing of the national economy, forecasters said at a Chamber of Commerce conference Wednesday.

”…Speakers touched on a variety of topics - from a Harrah's executive who chafed at a hodgepodge of gambling regulations nationwide to a National Airlines official concerned about skyrocketing jet fuel costs, and a technology expert who urged Las Vegas to stop fighting and embrace Internet gambling.

”…Gary Loveman, chief operating officer for Harrah's Entertainment and a former Harvard Business School professor, said the gambling industry has matured into a `safe, exciting activity’ that should be spared an `irrational’ patchwork of state-by-state and federal regulations.

”Mark Suman, a National Airlines senior vice president, said fuel costs could put a dent in Las Vegas tourism. He said airlines bring in more than 60 percent of the Strip's visitors.

”…Overall, the Southern Nevada economy should see modest growth in 2001, said R. Keith Schwer, director of the UNLV Business and Economic Research center. He delivered a similar forecast about Las Vegas gaming last month…”
