Buffalo Downtown Casino Plan Not All Positive

BUFFALO, New York – As reported by Buffalo News: "A downtown casino may have more negatives than positives for Buffalo, according to some Common Council members who are pressing for assurances that the city's interests will be protected.

"The casino debate rekindled Tuesday as the Council returned from summer recess. Some lawmakers claimed there are still many unanswered questions even though the Seneca Nation of Indians is apparently poised to announce a final site for its city casino.

"The concerns range from the impact a casino and related development could have on local businesses, to fears that the Senecas might continue to acquire downtown land for future expansions.

"…[North Council Member Joseph Golombek Jr.] said he is not philosophically opposed to gambling, he expressed doubts that the project would create any benefits beyond the short-term construction jobs that would be created. He noted that some downtown business leaders have recently warned that a casino could have a detrimental effect.

"…Council Majority Leader Marc A. Coppola voiced similar concerns, claiming he has been trying unsuccessfully for months to get information from officials who have been talking with Seneca leaders. Coppola said he also had lengthy meetings with officials in Niagara County to better understand how the casino there has affected the area's business climate and finances…"
