Brum Casino Decision Delayed

26 July 2005

BIRMINGHAM, UK -- As reported by iC Birmingham: "The man in charge of Birmingham's leisure portfolio has declared his opposition to a new super-casino for the city.

"Councillor John Alden said he would not back plans for a mega-gambling complex, as a meeting which had been expected to see the city come out in favour of the proposals failed to reach a conclusion.

"...Cabinet backing yesterday for a super-casino would have eliminated the need for the issue to go before a full council meeting.

"It would also have allowed Birmingham to immediately join the race against other cities bidding for a limited number of the new licences expected to be available under the Government's relaxation of the gaming laws.

"...Instead, it was agreed that local party leaders would meet before a decision on whether to support the principle or a specific project..."
