Bossier Wins New Gaming Revenues

LOUISIANA – As reported by the Shreveport Times: "Every pull on the slot machine, every roll of the dice at two Shreveport casinos could soon help pay for smoother roads, concrete ditches or other projects in Bossier Parish.

"Parish officials have reached an agreement with both Sam's Town Casino and Hollywood Casino -- soon-to-be Eldorado Casino pending gaming board approval -- that will send a cut of gaming revenues to the parish. Bossier Parish's portion would be about $550,000 per year from Hollywood and about $125,000 per year from Sam's Town based on current revenues, parish Administrator Bill Altimus estimated.

"…The parish pays an average of $50,000 per mile for new roads. Marcille Hollis, a lifelong parish resident and a member of Benton's Town Council, said she hopes the parish will use casino money to fix some roads in Benton, especially the ones with potholes.

"…The parish's wish list also includes extending or widening six roads as part of a $23 million transportation plan, paving some ditches with drainage problems and upgrading sewerage systems. All of these are projects the new casino revenues could help fund if the Police Jury chooses.

"…The new revenues for the parish will be in addition to what it brings in from Horseshoe, Boomtown, Isle of Capri and Harrah's Louisiana Downs; those revenues topped $1.9 million in 2004…"
