Borgata Union Deal Raises Industry Bar24 December 2003ATLANTIC CITY -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "Members of Local 54 of the Hotel Employees, Restaurant Employees International Union overwhelmingly approved a groundbreaking contract with Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa on Tuesday, setting an agenda for future negotiations with casino operators that includes the first full coverage of subcontractor workers. "The vote was 386-17 in favor of the contract. "…The overwhelming success of the 45-month contract, which goes into effect today, gives Local 54 a bigger bargaining chip when it comes time to talk with the other 11 casinos next year. The union's contract with the casino industry expires Sept. 15. The Borgata contract is good until Sept. 15, 2007. "…Casino restaurants are often run by subcontractors who lease space from the casino. The Borgata contract is the first in the city to cover all restaurant and hotel employees under the same language, [Local 54 President Robert McDevitt] said. "… Borgata CEO Robert Boughner said the company's primary concern was for itself and its employees, not the industry as a whole…" |
