Borgata Boosts Atlantic City Winnings

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "It was another big step forward for the casino industry in January and another small step backward for most casinos individually.

"The industry as a whole endured bad weather to win $336.5 million from gamblers in January, up 9.7 percent compared to the same month last year, the Casino Control Commission reported Tuesday.

"The new Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa drove the big gain with gross winnings of $47.4 million, maintaining its No. 2 position in the revenue rankings.

"A big chunk of Borgata's winnings came at the expense of the 11 other, older casinos, which saw their collective revenue decrease by 4.5 percent.

"…For the first time since Borgata opened, no casino reported a revenue decline of more than 10 percent.

"…Casinos benefited last month from an extra Saturday compared to January 2003, the spillover of New Year's Weekend and marginally tighter slot machines.

"On the downside, snow, ice and rain frequently kept gamblers at home and casinos had slightly worse luck at the gaming tables.

"Whatever the factors, the industry chalked up 9-plus percent growth for the third time in four months…"
