Borgata Bets on Table Games

ATLANTIC CITY – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "A year ago, Atlantic City had a reputation as a place where old people came to play slot machines.

"Now, the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa may be changing that reputation. The new kid in town is winning big by gambling on the appeal of table games to a younger market.

"Borgata, which had the second-highest gross earnings of any casino in November, got 38 percent of its gaming revenue from the tables. The average for other casinos is 25 percent. And, for the first time in 23 years, the growth of table revenue is outpacing slot growth in the city.

"..In some ways, the move away from table games has been the story of casino gaming in the resort. Since 1980, when slots contributed 42 percent of casino revenue, that percentage has steadily grown. Last year, three-quarters of casino revenue came from slot machines.

"But since opening in July, Borgata has made a habit of bucking industry trends. Borgata gambled that there was a market in Atlantic City for a hip, young and sexy casino. In other words, Borgata found a niche nobody else was filling - at least not in Atlantic City…"
