Border nabs gambler's casino winnings

8 November 2010

WINDSOR, Ontario -- A Michigan man who won money at Caesars Windsor lost quite a chunk of it at the border, The Montreal Gazette reported.

The gambler won $40,000, deposited $20,000 of it with the casino and attempted to bring the rest home without declaring it, the report said.

The gambler distributed his winnings with a friend and they both pretended to have won the same amount which aroused suspicions, the Montreal Gazette explained.

The border guards seized it from him as a penalty because even though there is no limit on the amount people can bring in and out of Canada there is a requirement to declare any amount over $10,000 and fill in a form, The Montreal Gazette reported.

The gambler can appeal the seizure and will likely see his money returned minus a penalty amount, the report noted.
