Boomer bulge could boost number of problem gamblers in Ontario

ONTARIO, Canada -- As reported by the CBC: "Baby boomers could increase the number of problem gamblers in Ontario by more than 40 per cent by 2020, the Responsible Gambling Council says.

"It's not that boomers are more inclined to be problem gamblers than other age groups. In fact, only an estimated 2.1 per cent of Ontarians over 55 are problem gamblers, much less than the rate among young adults18-24 and below the 3.4 per cent rate among the general adult population in Ontario.

"But there are so many boomers that if the 2.1 per cent figure holds, close to 100,000 Ontario seniors could face gambling problems by 2020, compared with almost 67,000 older adults today.

"The council, a non-profit organization devoted to problem-gambling prevention, is targeting boomers in March during its responsible-gambling month campaign.

"...For older gamblers, it's not about money, council research shows. Instead, they gamble 'for an emotional boost,' to relieve boredom or distract them from other issues..."
