Bookmaker Says Profits Paid Tuition

CLEVELAND -- As reported by the Plains Dealer: "Paul Smith says he ran a gambling ring so his children could learn Catholic moral values.

"An attorney for Smith told a judge Tuesday that his client worked as a bookmaker in order to afford tuition at St. Luke School, St. Edward High School, St. Joseph Academy and two private colleges.

"'This money wasn't going to the mob; it was going to St. Luke's,' said Smith's attorney, James Wooley.

"…He said some of the money also went to Smith's church and summer basketball camps for poor students, "not for yachts or other toys."

"U.S. District Judge Ann Aldrich placed Smith on three years' probation, ordering him to spend the first six months under house arrest. She also fined him $3,000 for working with some of Cleveland's longtime bookmakers in a ring that netted tens of thousands of dollars a month.

"…Smith, 44, of Lakewood, was charged after a three-year investigation by the IRS and the FBI…"
