Bookies Thrilled with Hamilton's Open Win

19 July 2004

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Scotsman: "Little-known American Todd Hamilton won the Open at Royal Troon yesterday in one of the most dramatic contests in recent years.

"Hamilton, 37, was a 200/1 outsider to take the title at the start of the tournament - and Ladbrokes and William Hill said they had only taken a total of six bets on him.

"After beating the tournament favourite, the South African Ernie Els, in a play-off, Hamilton was embraced by his caddy, Ron Levin. He then hugged wife Jaque, mother Jane and his three children, Tyler, Kaylee and Drake.

"…Ladbrokes said their highest bet on Hamilton was £10, coincidentally from a customer named Hamilton, while William Hill's only bet for the American to win was just £4. A spokesman said they would be delighted to pay out the £800 because, had 6/1 favourite Els won the tournament, they would have been paying a 'seven figure sum' to a single customer."
