Bookie Lied Under Pressure

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australia Herald Sun: "Bookmaker Anthony Cullen lied about his relationship with jockey Craig Newitt because he had been under enormous pressure over mounting innuendo he had 'fixed' the Highways Tabaret Handicap at Sandown last year, the Racing Appeals Tribunal heard yesterday.

"Patrick Wheelahan, representing Cullen, told the RAT the bookmaker was aware of the speculation he had been involved in 'fixing' the race in regard to Leone Chiara's performance.

"…Mr Wheelahan said Cullen had been under pressure and as a result concocted a lie.

"He described it as a case where one lie snowballed.

"…Cullen was initially disqualified for 12 months for giving false evidence at the Racing Victoria stewards' inquiry into all circumstances surrounding the running of the Highways Tabaret Handicap at Sandown on November 15. Leone Chiara was unplaced in the race and was ridden by Newitt.

"Cullen was disqualifed for a further two years in relation to false evidence on 16 counts. He is appealing against the severity of the penalty…"
