Blair Challenged to Explain Gambling Controversy

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the UK Guardian: "Tony Blair was challenged yesterday by members of Labour's national executive committee to explain how the government allowed the row over gambling to blow up so spectacularly.

"After a week in which normally loyal MPs rebelled over smacking and gambling, and Iraq has returned to the agenda with the redeployment of the Black Watch regiment, Labour has looked in danger of losing its grip on the domestic agenda. Yesterday members of Labour's executive made clear their concerns about the impact on the party's election prospects.

"Although the 32-strong body has no direct say over government policy, it brings together powerful union and party representatives and their unease will not be lost on Mr Blair…"
