Blackpool hoopla scam's 2,600 to 1 odds

31 May 2010

BLACKPOOL, England -- A hoopla stall in Blackpool had its equipment impounded because the odds of winning turned out to be a staggering 2600 to one, the BBC reported.

Gamblers shelled out thousands without knowing this, the report said.

A maths academic recreated the game and discovered it was virtually impossible to win, leading to the conviction of two men for breaching gambling laws.

Hoopla involves throwing a ring at a peg, but the experiments verified the angle of the peg was cut such it proved impossible to land the hoop on it, the BBC report said.
