Blackpool bid gets support

BLACKPOOL, England – As reported by the UK Stage: "Blackpool's faint hopes of rescuing its plans for a super-casino have received a fillip this week, as the Conservative Party declared it would side against the Casino Advisory Panel's recommendation of Manchester in a vital Commons vote.

"The apparent U-turn from the Tories, who had previously been expected to vote in favour of the proposals, follows a damning report by a House of Lords scrutiny committee, which warned that the CAP's initial decision-making process might have been flawed. It claimed that the panel's members seem to have misunderstood the criteria it had been set when asked to decide a preferred location for the UK's one super-casino and that Blackpool, as a destination casino, might have been given "insufficient weight in the ranking".

"Indeed, the group warned that the CAP's interpretation of its criteria made it 'virtually impossible' to recommend any destination or resort casino to the government.

"The Tory decision to vote against the CAP's recommendations will be seen as a great boost to Blackpool's bid, whose plans for a live entertainment themed resort casino was rejected by the panel…"
