Blackjack Games Popular with Players

MISSISSIPPI – As reported by the Mississippi Sun Herald: "Several South Mississippi casinos have introduced a variety of blackjack that gives the house a greatly increased edge and causes gamblers to win less money. And players are lining up for it.

"The single deck game pays at 6:5 ratio for a blackjack (an ace with either a 10 or a face card) instead of the standard 3:2. In other words, a player who wagers $20 and gets a 21 wins $30 in a 3:2 game; in a 6:5 game, the player wins $24.

"Despite the unfavorable odds, the game is popular with players.

"'Players enjoy single deck blackjack, because most people think they're card counters,' said Jeff Prusinowski, vice president of casino operations for Treasure Bay.

"Henry Tamburin, a Las Vegas blackjack expert, said the trend of 6:5 single deck blackjack started about two or three years ago at the Las Vegas Flamingo Hilton. At the time, single deck games had nearly died out in Las Vegas, because the house odds are so slim. Single deck games remain popular with players, because of the favorable odds and fewer cards to keep track of.

"…The new payouts were introduced in South Mississippi in summer 2003, when Beau Rivage petitioned the Mississippi Gaming Commission for the change.

"…Along with Beau Rivage, four other Coast casinos offer 6:5 single deck blackjack: Casino Magic Biloxi, Isle of Capri, Palace Casino and Treasure Bay…"
