Bill targets tribal casinos

WASHINGTON, DC -- As reported by Orange County Register: "If the Juaneno Mission Indians from Orange County get recognized as a tribe by the federal government, Rep. John Campbell wants to make sure they can't build a casino for 25 years on any land they buy.

"Rep. Campbell, R-Irvine, on Thursday introduced a bill that would ban any American Indian tribe from building a casino for 25 years after it has been federally recognized.

"...Campbell's bill comes as the Juanenos are well on their way to federal recognition. The tribe first petitioned the federal government in 1982 and should know by Nov. 26 whether the Bureau of Indian Affairs will likely grant its request.

"...San Juan Capistrano Mayor Sam Allevato supports tribal recognition and said Campbell's bill appeared 'a little unfair' because it does not allow all tribes to have casinos.

"The Juanenos are scattered throughout Orange County. The tribe's ancestral homeland generally spanned from the Santa Ana Mountains to the coast, and from deep into Camp Pendleton and Oceanside to the south to Seal Beach to the north, Allevato said..."
