Bid for Two New Detroit Casinos Dies2 April 2004WASHINGTON, DC – As reported by the Detroit News: "Legislation that would have allowed new Indian casinos in Romulus and Port Huron died in the U.S. House Thursday. It was the third time in just over two years the measure has gone down to defeat. "Despite heavy opposition from Detroit casinos, controversy about the way the proposed casino sites were determined and the emergence of a coalition of opponents organized by Michigan Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, backers said they won't give up. Both casinos were approved by voters in those cities. "…Other officials thought the measures set a bad precedent by giving Indian casinos a new way to move outside of traditional federally established reservations…" |
