BGLC Readies for Casino Gaming21 June 2004JAMAICA -- As reported by the Jamaica Observer: "The Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) will next month send two employees to the United States for technical training in gaming operations in a move to strengthen its regulatory functions and prepare the agency for the possible formal approval of casinos here. "According to BGLC chairman Walter Scott, the staff members will receive training at Atlantic Cape Community College in New Jersey under a Memorandum of Understanding between the BGLC and Atlantic Cape. "...Ostensibly, the training will include equipping the BGLC staff with knowledge of how to detect and counter motherboard tampering in gaming machines, and methods of properly calibrating the machines. "The casino debate has raged on and off for more than two decades with private sector groups and tourism interests lobbying for its introduction to boost the tourism product, while the Jamaica Council of Churches has led a strong opposition to its introduction. Although other forms of gambling have been legalised, the authorities have so far bowed to pressure from the anti-lobby and drawn the line at casinos..." |
