Betting scandal hits cricket competition

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australia Courier Mail: "World Cup corruption police have been put on red alert after another betting scandal rocked world cricket yesterday.

"Seven years after corrupt South African captain Hansie Cronje was exposed by an Indian phone tap, Nagpur police used the same covert method to confirm a link between West Indian batsman Marlon Samuels and bookmaker Mukesh Kochchar.

"…Samuels angrily denied accusations he took money for information which is illegal in cricket's code of behaviour.

"…The incident confirmed corruption-police fears that there are still shady dealings between players and bookmakers despite the crackdown on illegal gambling after the game was brought to its knees in the 1990s…"
