Betting Pool Operated from Carolina University

NORTH CAROLINA – As reported by the Triangle Business Journal:"Acting on a complaint, investigators from the State Auditor's Office have confirmed than an employee of East Carolina University's Health Sciences Library operated an Internet-based football gambling pool from his library office.

"The employee, Matthew Ballengee, admitted to using a university notebook computer, fax machine, copier and paper in running an Internet-based football pool. He also said he used a university mailbox to receive cash from participant in the pool.

"…The auditor's office said Ballengee's pool violated East Carolina's computer use policy and also violated the state law prohibiting gambling in North Carolina. Gambling is a Class 2 misdemeanor.

"…In his response, East Carolina Chancellor William E. Shelton said the university would 'impose appropriate sanctions' against Ballengee and report the incident to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation…"
