Betfair Stays Away from Tasmanian Scandal16 January 2006AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "UK betting exchange operator Betfair has always attracted success and controversy in equal measure. So the latest storm over Tasmanian Premier Paul Lennon's luxurious stay at Crown Casino, owned by Betfair's business partner Publishing & Broadcasting, may be an appropriate curtain-raiser to Betfair getting the right to set foot in Australia. "Luckily for Betfair, the political storm is not expected to affect the final decision by the Tasmanian Gaming Commission, which is reviewing the company's application for a licence and is expected to hand down its decision this week. "The commission's deliberations are expected to focus on whether Betfair's application complies with the recently passed state legislation and some probity checks. Not that Betfair is happy to associate itself with the PBL hospitality issue. "…Technically speaking this is true: Betfair's local joint venture with the Packer family's flagship company will only be triggered when the betting exchange operator gets its licence. Not that anyone is waiting around for things to happen…" |
