BC Lotteries delayed relaying security breach to minister

17 September 2010

VANCOUVER, BC -- It has emerged that the BC Lottery Corporation did not immediately inform the BC government about the security breach in July, The Vancouver Sun reported.

The BC Lottery Corporation also claimed initially that the PlayNow site was down because of high traffic rather than a security breach, the report said.

The first email sent by BC Lottery CEO to the Minister responsible for gaming Rich Coleman did not disclose the problem as a security breach. A second email later that day admitted it, the Vancouver Sun report said.

A public report into the security breach has been instigated by the Privacy Commissioner, the Vancouver Sun report noted.
