Bay Meadows track granted reprieve

CALIFORNIA -- As reported by the San Jose Mercury News: "The California Horse Racing Board voted Tuesday to grant Bay Meadows Race Course a one-year exemption from installing a synthetic racing surface, a move that will probably keep the venue open for at least another year.

"Local officials praised the 5-0 vote for the waiver, which reversed a previous denial and will temporarily preserve about 500 jobs and $500,000 in county fair funding.

"...On March 22, the board denied Bay Meadows' request for a two-year waiver from installing the costly polymer surface, believed to be safer for horses and now required of tracks that conduct more than four weeks of racing a year. The denial would have forced the track to spend $8 million in improvements for a facility slated to be torn down for development, prompting Bay Meadows President Jack Liebau to declare that the board had effectively shut the track down for good..."
