Baseball betting scandal hits Taiwan

28 October 2009

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Six people have been arrested in Taiwan suspected of accepting bets in a baseball match fixing scandal, Reuters reported.

Baseball is Taiwan's most popular sport, and is losing public interest on account of recent betting scandals, with the government vowing to crack down on gambling.

Further investigation is expected, as the authorities try to figure out which players may have been bribed into a deliberate lack of effort, the Reuters report said.
