Barstow Negotiates New Casino Contract

BARSTOW, California – As reported by the Desert Dispatch: "City Council members agreed to plans Wednesday that may allow Barstow residents a vote to support Indian gaming, and approved expediting casino-related contracts with two Indian tribes.

"The council voted 3-2 in favor of having the city staff negotiate a municipal services agreement with the Chemehuevi Indian tribe, which proposes to build a casino here, by the end of July.

"Council members also agreed to have the staff go through the same process with the Big Lagoon Rancheria once the tribe submits its 'due diligence' information about the tribe's background and suitability for the project, and a required payment.

"A spokesman for BarWest LLC, the investment group working with Big Lagoon, said Tuesday that he expects his team to be submitting that information to the city in about a week.

"…The measure would be like a poll, designed to find out if voters support the development of Indian gaming in Barstow. The outcome would serve as an advisory vote to show the City Council, the governor and the Interior Department whether the community supports having a casino…"
