Barstow Initiative Would Allow Tribal Casino27 May 2005BARSTOW, California – As reported by the Desert Dispatch: "A proposed ballot initiative would allow the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe to build a casino here, but could put a halt to existing efforts by two other tribes and the City of Barstow to build gaming resorts in the area. "Former City Council member Manuel 'Gil' Gurule submitted the initiative that he describes as pro-Indian gaming to the city clerk Monday evening. He provided a copy of the initiative to the Desert Dispatch Thursday. "Gurule said he will be getting help from the Chemehuevi tribe to pass the initiative. "The initiative contains a number of requirements that a tribe would have to meet to qualify for a casino in Barstow. "…Among those requirements are that the tribe in question would either have to already have a reservation in San Bernardino County or be referenced in the Barstow General Plan…" |
