Barstow Happy with Schwarzenegger's Proclamation

BARSTOW, California – As reported by the Desert Dispatch: "Barstow is among the communities that are eligible for Indian gaming, based on a proclamation the governor released Wednesday.

"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's proclamation states that his general tribal gaming policy does not support casinos in urban areas where tribes seek to get land in federal trust.

"The most recent list of urbanized areas does not include Barstow.

"…'That was real good news,' Mayor Lawrence Dale said of the proclamation.

"Michigan-based BarWest LLC, the Los Coyotes Band of Indians and the Big Lagoon Rancheria are seeking compacts from the governor to build a two-casino project in Barstow. The Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, who the city recently agreed to start working with, also needs a state compact for its proposed casino.

"The proclamation also states that casinos to be built on newly acquired land -- which would include those proposed for Barstow -- must have local government support, community support and serve a public policy…"
