Barstow Council Stays Out of Casino Debate

BARSTOW, California – As reported by the Desert Dispatch: "The City Council this week decided not to take a position on the controversial local casino initiative.

"The council voted Monday night to go with a neutral position on the initiative, 'Indian Gaming: Preference for Tribes in San Bernardino County.'

"Now also titled 'Measure H,' the proposal seeks, among other things, to designate a casino zone within city limits where casinos would be permitted. If passed by voters in the June 6 primary election, the zone would include the Chemehuevi tribe's project but exclude another dual-casino resort being proposed by the Los Coyotes and the Big Lagoon tribes.

"If the initiative is approved, it would jeopardize an already signed agreement between the city and the Los Coyotes, according to City Attor ney Yvette Abich.

"…It took the council two votes to decide on a neutral stance on the initiative…"
