Barstow Casino Ballot Petition Sent In

BARSTOW, California – (PRESS RELEASE) -- A former City Council member has enough valid signatures to get his Indian gaming ballot initiative before voters, but it will probably be later than he had hoped.

The San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters office sent the city confirmation Wednesday that 1,490 of the 2,101 petition signatures were valid for Manuel 'Gil' Gurule's initiative. It needed at least 1,234 signatures to qualify.

The next step in the process is for the city clerk, acting as the city's elections official, to certify that the petition is sufficient, and for the City Council to decide what to do with it. The Council ultimately must either adopt it as law or put in the ballot for an election.

Patricia Morris, assistant to the Barstow city manager, said City Clerk JoAnne Cousino will be certifying the initiative at the next regular City Council meeting Monday, and that's when the Council will decide what to do with it.

However, Monday will be too late for Friday's deadline for the Council to submit the initiative to be on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Gurule said he's upset because he wanted the initiative to be on the November ballot…"
