Barden asking for public funding

INDIANA – As reported by the Gary Post-Tribune: "A millionaire casino owner is asking for public money to help build a multipurpose arena at Buffington Harbor.

"Don Barden's Majestic Star Casino sent a letter to the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority this month asking if the RDA would consider a proposal to help fund the project.

"If the RDA agrees, it means tax money from Lake and Porter counties will be used.

"Tim Sanders, executive director of the RDA, said the RDA has never received a request from a private venture before.

"Some of the region's leaders don't want the RDA funding one, either.

"…Gary Mayor Rudy Clay also said he was aware of Barden's proposal before it came up at the RDA meeting…"
