Bangladesh Journalists Attacked for Reporting on Gambling23 February 2005BANGLADESH – As reported by the Bangladesh Daily Star: "Cadres of the ruling BNP's student front, Jatyiatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), yesterday beat up a journalist in Kushtia, demanding he leave the town within 12 hours or face 'dire consequences,' and also confined four other senior journalists at an office who attempted to rescue him. "…Police said Al-Mamun Sagar, Kushtia correspondent of the national daily Jugantor and electronic media ATN Bangla, was attacked by JCD cadres after sending a report to the daily about a gambling programme at the Ekuesy Fair, organised by JCD on the Kushtia Government College premises. "Sources said the general public has been concerned about the widespread gambling taking place at the fair, which has been running since February 1st. "On February 18, the Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP), an underground political party, even threatened to launch a grenade attack on the fair if the authorities failed to stop the gambling programme…" |
