Ballot Board approves Ohio casinos petition14 April 2009COLUMBUS, Ohio -- As reported by The Columbus Dispatch: "Backers of a proposal to place casinos in Ohio's four largest cities can begin collecting signatures on a petition to place the issue on the November ballot. "The Ohio Ballot Board today determined that the casino ballot measure contains a single constitutional amendment, clearing the way for supporters to hit the streets and gather signatures. "The vote was 4-1. Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, the chairwoman of the Ballot Board, dissented. She cited a provision on the ballot measure that would authorize the same type of gambling in Ohio as in four neighboring states, saying that it would be unprecedented to link Ohio law to that in other states. "The Ohio Jobs and Growth Plan would place one casino each in the downtowns of Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo. "Supporters must submit valid signatures of 402,275 registered Ohio voters to the secretary of state by July 1 to qualify for the November ballot..." |
