Baccarat is an adventure waiting to happen

20 November 2008

Baccarat is the oldest of all games played in modern casinos and is real simple to play. The objective of the game is to predict which of the two hands (banker or player) will be closer to having a value of 9. A player can also bet on a tie, which pays 8:1 at VIP Slots.

The player competes against the banker. Wagers are placed in the Tie, Banker and Player areas shown on the table. And in this version of the game, cards are dealt from an eight-deck shoe.

Two hands of cards are dealt, one for the player and one for the banker. Each hand will contain either two or three cards. The winning hand will be the one whose value is closet to nine.

Card values

  • Face cards and 10s have no value.
  • Aces are counted as a one.
  • All other cards are counted at face value.
  • Values that exceed nine are adjusted by removing the tens column -- thus a 15 becomes a five.

If the value of the cards in either the player's hand or the banker's hand is an 8 or a 9 (a "natural") after receiving their initial two cards, then the game ends right there. If a player's hand is between 0-5, it must draw. If it's a six or a seven, it must stay. If the banker's hand is between 0-2 it must draw. If the banker draws a seven it must stand. If the banker draws between 3-6, it will draw or stand according to this chart, which can be found in the "Help" section of the game:

Banker's hand Banker's hand draws when Player's third card is: Banker's hand does not draw when Player's third card is:
Ace-2-3-4-5-6-7-9 8
4 2-3-4-5-6-7 8-9-10-Jack-Queen-King-Ace
5 4-5-6-7 2-3-8-9-10-Jack-Queen-King-Ace
6 6-7 2-3-4-5-8-9-10-Jack-Queen-King-Ace

NOTE: If the Player's hand stands on two cards (6,7), then a two-card Banker hand totaling 3,4,5 must draw and a Banker hand totaling 6 must stand.

Following the game is quite easy once you get the hang of it, and since everything is automated, there is no strategy involved. And Baccarat is James Bond's favorite game. So in honor of Quantam of Solace, why don't you try your hand at VIP Slots' Baccarat?
