Australian Town Loses Pokie Battle

VICTORIA, Australia – As reported by the Herald Sun: "A town has lost its fight against poker machines after a judge ruled it could not be treated differently from the rest of Victoria.

"The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has over-ruled a finding by Victoria's gambling watchdog that pokies should not be allowed in Drouin.

"Despite opposition from the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation and the local council, VCAT ruled the small Gippsland town could not be spared from poker machines.

"VCAT president Justice Stuart Morris said Drouin, which is not considered a disadvantaged area, had no right to be treated as a special case.

"…Mayor Ian Clark said the decision was out of touch with the needs of country areas…"
