Australian States to Ban Smoking in Pubs

AUSTRALIA – As reported by Bloomberg: "Victoria and New South Wales, Australia's two most populous states, plan to ban smoking in pubs and other licensed premises by July 1 2007.

"New South Wales will ban smoking in all enclosed areas where alcohol is served in 2007, with venues restricted to one smoking room from July next year, Health Minister Frank Sartor said in a statement faxed to Bloomberg News. Victoria plans a three-month consultation period with the industry and community before finalizing the details of its bans.

"…Private gaming rooms at Star City will be excluded from the ban with its exemption to be reviewed annually and abolished when casinos in other states ban smoking in `equivalent areas,'he said."
